چکیده

In this work we studied the two-dimensional ionization structure of the circumnuclear and extranuclear regions in a sample of six low−z Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies using Integral Field Spectroscopy. The ionization conditions in the extranuclear regions of these galaxies (∼ 5−15 kpc) are typical of LINERs as obtained from the Veilleux-Osterbrock line ratio diagnostic diagrams. The range of observed line ratios is best explained by the presence of fast shocks with velocities of 150 to 500 km s, while the ionization by an AGN or nuclear starburst is Now in Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam, An der Sternwarte, 16, D 14482 Potsdam On leave from the Instituto de Astrof́ısica de Canarias (CSIC) Affiliated with the Space Telescope Division of the European Space Agency, ESTEC, Nordwijk, Netherlands

Merger-induced Starbursts

Extragalactic starbursts induced by gravitational interactions can now be studied from z ≈ 0 to ∼ >2. The evidence that mergers of gas-rich galaxies tend to trigger galaxy-wide starbursts is strong, both statistically and in individual cases of major disk–disk mergers. Star formation rates appear enhanced by factors of a few to ∼10 above normal. Detailed studies of nearby mergers and ULIRGs sug...

Mid-infrared and Optical Spectroscopy of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: a Comparison 1

New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classiications { starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) { with classiications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The agr...

Spitzer Mid - Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared

We have observed 14 nearby (z < 0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6—24µm. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity. ULIRGs...

Gas Properties in the Medusa Minor Merger — Comparing with Ulirgs

High resolution observations of CO and CO 1–0 in the Medusa (NGC 4194) minor merger show the CO 13CO 1–0 intensity ratio (R1−0) increasing from normal values (5-10) in the outer parts of the galaxy to high (> 20) values in the central, extended starburst region. Ratios > 20 are otherwise typical of more luminous mergers. The Medusa LFIR LCO ratio rivals that of ultraluminous galaxies (ULIRGs), ...
